Get Started In USPSA
Interested in USPSA but not sure how to begin? Here's how to make your first match a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Before Match Day
Find a Match
The easiest way to find upcoming matches is through PractiScore. Columbia Cascade clubs across the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon run matches year-round:
- Albany Rifle and Pistol Club — Shedd, OR
- COSSA Practical Shooters — Bend, OR
- Dundee Practical Shooters — Dundee, OR
- Eugene IWLA USPSA — Eugene, OR
- Tri-County Gun Club — Sherwood, OR
Contact the Match Director
Most matches have a "New Shooter" checkbox during PractiScore registration — check it. If you have questions before the match, use the contact info on the club's PractiScore page to reach the Match Director directly.
Payment
Most clubs accept credit card payments online through PractiScore during registration.
Learn the Basics
Before your first match, take a few minutes with these two resources:
- USPSA New Member Virtual Experience — an interactive introduction to USPSA competition, rules, and what to expect at a match
- New Shooter Safety Brief — covers the safety rules, range commands, and equipment you need for your first match
Being familiar with this material ahead of time makes the day go better for you and your squad.
Match Day
Arrival and Check-In
Arrive early — typically by 8:00–8:30 AM (confirm with your specific club) — to check in, attend the new shooter briefing, and get paired with a mentor on your squad. Your squadmates will be friendly and glad to help your first match go well.
On the Range
Keep three things in mind:
- Shoot safely. Follow all Range Officer commands and safety rules without exception.
- Learn the flow. Shoot last in your squad so you can observe others first. Take things at your own pace.
- Have fun. Everyone started as a new shooter. You're in good company.
We look forward to seeing you on the range. Welcome to Columbia Cascade!
